Trade deadline blunders!

As the trade deadline approaches and teams make a push for the division title and world series trophy the same question always arises. Should the general manager make a move or not. Most fans say of course they should. But how much is too much to pay.  We’ve seen many trade deadline moves that help teams like the Red Sox dumping Nomar (I’m faking hurt) Garciaparra for Orlando Cabrera (who some say should still be their starting shortstop) and Dave Roberts who stole second base in the ALDS and triggered the miracle comeback down 3-0 to the Yankees.
At the same time we’ve seen many teams make some pretty bone headed moves trying to make the move that puts them over the edge. Eric Gagne anyone?  Last year The sox sent Kason Gabbard, David Murphy and Engel Beltre to the Rangers for Gagne. Not looking too good of a trade now considering Gagne earned the nick name “gag me” Gagne. This trade comes to mind as a Sox fan, lets go back to some all time blunders shall we. A glaring trade stands out back in ’04 when the Mets sent Scott Kazmir and Jose Diaz to Tampa Bay for Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato. Ouch.!! How’d that trade work out for you Omar? Someone must have lost their job for that one. Or how About the Oakland A’s dealt one time home run king Mark McGwire to the Cardinals for pitchers T.J. Mathews, Eric Ludwich and Blake Stein. Ever heard of any of those guys. I have I think one of them washed my windshield as I was stopped at a red light last week. Here’s another good one for you, The mariners sent Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek to the Red Sox for Heathcliff Slocumb in 1997. D-Lowe pitched a no hitter and and Varitek has caught 4 no-hitters and helped win two world championships. Meanwhile Slocumb is now changing tires at the local Super Wal-Mart. Now for the official Trojan’s boner of the week. The Red Sox traded Jeff Bagwell to the Houston for reliever Larry Anderson in 1990. Who?? Larry Anderson???? Bagwell was a freakin Hall of Famer. Great move there. The Sox Regretted that one for just over a decade.

So before you go yelling at Theo Epstein or jumping off the Tobin bridge (If your in Boston) because he didn’t make a move just be glad he didn’t trade Manny Ramirez and Craig hansen for Boof Bonser or Dan wheeler. Although at the current time he still has about 28 hours to do so. The Sox are in need of middle relief so I shouldn’t speak too soon. Hopefully the Sox brass would double think the moves so they don’t end up making the terrible moves of the previous ownership and the old GM Dan douquette.
